About Lil' Planets
Since 2012, Lil’ Planets by Joel Conroy has transformed Pacific Northwest landmarks into mind-bending 360º panoramas. Each image isolates a place as its own world, inviting viewers to rediscover familiar environments through a fresh and immersive perspective. The creation process involves capturing 25+ overlapping images using either a drone or a panoramic tripod head, followed by precision stitching in post-production to generate a seamless 360º panorama, which is then transformed into a stereographic projection. Meticulous adjustments and Photoshop corrections ensure seamless results, enhanced with tone and color adjustments. Each image demands 6-10 hours of meticulous work, excluding shooting time.

FAQ
What are Lil' Planets?
Lil' Planets are immersive artworks created by warping 360-degree panoramic photos into tiny, globe-like worlds. The effect wraps the environment into a circular frame, creating a surreal, dreamlike perspective where sky, land, and subject all curve around a single point.
How are Lil' Planets created?
I capture a full 360-degree view using either a drone for aerial perspectives or a high end mirrorless camera mounted on a panoramic tripod head for ground-level precision. The stitched panorama is then projected into a circular “planet” using specialized software and refined through detailed post-processing to enhance composition, contrast, and clarity.
What makes the Lil' Planets process unique?
Unlike automated 360 photography, my Lil’ Planets are entirely hands-on and artist-driven. Using advanced techniques, I control lighting, angle, exposure, and composition to achieve the highest image quality. Each image is carefully planned, whether from drone or ground based on the location’s layout, symmetry, and emotional tone. The final transformation is a sculptural digital process, where I fine-tune distortion and tone to create immersive, cohesive visuals that tell a story. This blend of technical precision and artistic intent sets my work apart.
What types of scenes work best for Lil' Planets?
Wide-open spaces with prominent central features, such as cityscapes, landmarks, waterfalls, lakes and mountains translate beautifully into Little Planet compositions. Aerial shots from drones enhance visual symmetry, while ground-based captures reveal layered depth and architectural nuance.
Can I commission a custom Lil' Planet?
Yes. I offer custom commissions for individuals, businesses, and institutions. Whether it’s a place of business, a cultural landmark, or special event, I can create a one-of-a-kind Lil' Planet to capture and transform your space or idea into a work of art.
